Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District

Our organization is the oldest conservation entity in Washington County. Founded in April 1950 as a result of the dust bowl, our focus has always been to promote a positive, sustainable relationship between the residents of our county and the natural resources that make up their home. Throughout our 75 years of existence, we have remained a steadfast community presence in Washington County. Our mission is "to improve the economic performance of Washington County's natural resources for the benefit of residents by encouraging the independent application of proven resource protection methods." We do this through two major avenues: technical service and education. With technical service, we can directly solve problems and create opportunities for landowners and the public. With education, we can give people the tools they need to solve problems themselves, or inspire people to better appreciate the natural resources around them. Some examples of technical service and outreach done recently by the Washington County SWCD include geologic walking tours of local parks, soil health classes for blueberry growers, forestry classes for small woodlot owners, and trips to various schools and libraries to teach students about natural resources.
