Volunteer: Gallery Tour GuideGallery tour guides provide accessible, educational tours of the indoor museum spaces to smaller groups of guests. They interpret the story of wooden shipbuilding in Maine and the Percy & Small Shipyard using the artifacts, paintings, and stories on display throughout the museum. Their tour also seamlessly joins with the outdoor Percy & Small shipyard tour, providing depth and background information of the unique story Maine Maritime Museum tells. Primary Responsibilities Complete Gallery Tour Guide Training. This includes specific training hours over the course of at least two sessions in late April/early May. Volunteer: Donnell House GuideDonnell House Guides interpret Maine Maritime Museum’s Victorian home, Donnell House, for museum visitors by conducting a 20-minute walking tour of the home. The Donnell House is a 19th-century Victorian home owned by the Donnell family who operated a wooden shipyard on their property. The home is furnished to represent life during the height of the family’s success in the 1890s. The tour guide shares stories of the Donnell family and the way in which shipbuilding impacted domestic and social life in Bath. Donnell House Guides are a part of the Interpretation Volunteer team that provides educational experiences to visitors on the museum campus. Donnell House Guides work in three-hour shifts; 20-minute tours are given on request by visitors. Successful guides are comfortable with public speaking, storytelling, and engaging with a diverse audience and broad age ranges. No prior experience or maritime knowledge is required. All new Donnell House Guides complete three hours of training that includes tour content, visitor engagement strategies, and museum orientation. Donnell House Guides are supervised by the Museum Education Specialist. Primary Responsibilities Complete Donnell House Guide Training. The Percy & Small Shipyard is the United States only remaining in-tact shipyard that constructed wooden vessels. The shipyard built wooden schooners primarily for the coal trade and in 1909 built the largest wooden vessel in North America, Schooner Wyoming. The tour guide shares the shipyard’s history and stories of the shipbuilding process, the shipyard workers, and the vessels they constructed.
