Donnell House Guides interpret Maine Maritime Museum’s Victorian home, Donnell House, for museum visitors by conducting a 20-minute walking tour of the home. The Donnell House is a 19th-century Victorian home owned by the Donnell family who operated a wooden shipyard on their property. The home is furnished to represent life during the height of the family’s success in the 1890s. The tour guide shares stories of the Donnell family and the way in which shipbuilding impacted domestic and social life in Bath. Donnell House Guides are a part of the Interpretation Volunteer team that provides educational experiences to visitors on the museum campus. Donnell House Guides work in three-hour shifts; 20-minute tours are given on request by visitors. Successful guides are comfortable with public speaking, storytelling, and engaging with a diverse audience and broad age ranges. No prior experience or maritime knowledge is required. All new Donnell House Guides complete three hours of training that includes tour content, visitor engagement strategies, and museum orientation. Donnell House Guides are supervised by the Museum Education Specialist.
